Derouging and passivation for steam sterilisers

Preserving the value of instruments instead of replacing them

Rouge in steam sterilisers is more than just a cosmetic problem. It affects the preservation of the value of your instruments and in the long run can lead to high costs for repairs or new purchases.

After a professional pH-neutral derouging and passivation service from Borer Chemie, your sterilisation chambers will sparkle like new. Sustainable and gentle on materials – without interrupting your CSSD operations.

Rouge and derouging

Dampfsterilisator mit Rouge-Belägen

What is rouge?

Due to the conditions prevailing during sterilisation, sterilisation chambers are prone to corrosion sooner or later in the form of widely distributed reddish-brown discolouration, known as rouge. During the extreme conditions of sterilisation, rouge in the form of flash rust can be transferred to the instruments being sterilised.
More about rouge

Why perform derouging and passivation?

Our customers report that discolouration, brown deposits and rouge occur regularly in many steam sterilisers.

In our pH-neutral derouging process, we reliably remove rouge and then perform passivation. The result: chambers that sparkle like new, instruments that are protected against flash rust, and lasting preservation of the value of your instruments.

The advantages of derouging with Borer Chemie

Preservation of value
No cross-contamination
Relief for CSSD teams
Time saving
Documented traceability
Sustainable Cleaning

How does derouging with Borer Chemie work?

During derouging by Borer Chemie application engineers, steam sterilisers are cleaned using an innovative mild pH-neutral process. Cleaning with the steriliser closed eliminates the need for any expensive enclosures. The specialists at Borer Chemie perform the derouging process from start to finish and produce a complete report on the derouging process. The final stage of each derouging process involves passivation of the sterilisation chamber.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time is required for derouging a steriliser?

We generally calculate one working day per chamber.

Does derouging also make economic sense for older sterilisers?

Always! Basic cleaning and subsequent passivation are particularly important for older devices in order to prevent the rouge from being carried over to the instruments.

Can derouging be carried out during ongoing laboratory operation?

Yes, that's not a problem. It is important to know, however, that the steriliser in question cannot be used for the day of the derouging and that there must be sufficient space for the derouging equipment.

What costs can be expected for derouging?

This can only be calculated after an assessment of your situation. We would be happy to provide you with a free, no-obligation quote. However, derouging sterilisation chambers makes an important contribution to maintaining the value of your instruments.

Are specialist machine technicians provided by the manufacturer required?

Yes, a steriliser is a medical device that can only be authorised for recommissioning by the manufacturer.

What is required on site for derouging?

Electricity (380V, 16A high-voltage current, in Switzerland CEE16 or Type 25), demineralised water connection, water drain (the steriliser's water drain is used).

How long does the chamber remain in optimum condition after derouging and passivation?

This depends on various parameters (water quality, steam) as well as the quality and quantity of routine cleaning.

Who carries out the derouging?

An experienced Borer Chemie Application Engineer and an employee provided by the steriliser manufacturer.

What causes the high costs for derouging, even though only the chambers are being cleaned?

For a derouging of one chamber, approx. 2 working days of personnel costs are charged, which are made up of the derouging (8-hour day, sometimes up to 1.5 days in the case of heavy soiling), set-up and dismantling times as well as travelling to and from the site. The chemicals and use of technical equipment is also included in the price.

Why are two specialists required (Borer Chemie Application Engineer + steriliser manufacturer's technician)?

Borer Chemie carries out the entire derouging process. As this is a medical device, the necessary preparation and follow-up work, including authorisation for recommissioning, must be carried out by a technician provided by the steriliser manufacturer.

Is there a risk to staff in the CSSD during the derouging process?

No, this is a closed procedure.

Is a dust protection wall required to prevent contamination of the instruments?

No.

Can the steriliser be used again safely once the derouging work has been completed?

Yes, thanks to the passivation of the surface, the chamber can be used normally immediately after recommissioning.

Does surface erosion occur, and if so, to what extent?

No. There is no mechanical or chemical erosion on the surfaces of the sterilisation chambers during the derouging process. Heavily soiled surfaces must be cleaned manually using an abrasive fleece prior to the derouging process. This may result in sanding marks on the surfaces. These surfaces are sealed again by the final passivation process.

Do you need an extraction system or air exchange because of possible odour nuisance?

The derouging process can be carried out in individual phases. How unpleasant this is considered to be depends on the subjective perception of the people present. Derouging is carried out under normal working conditions, ensuring ventilation or a controlled air exchange rate at the workplace, thus avoiding a hazardous accumulation of gases.

How is it ensured that no residues of the derouging agent remain in the chamber?

The documented measurement of the conductivity value ensures that no unauthorised amount of chemical used during the derouging process remains in the chamber.

What distinguishes this derouging process from others?

Gentle on surfaces, thanks to pH-neutral process. Sustainable, thanks to subsequent passivation. Low environmental impact based on neutralisation of the cleaning solution. No dust generation as with electropolishing or other processes that require dust walls or an enclosure.

Can derouging be carried out with all sterilisers (manufacturers)?

Derouging has been carried out for the following system manufacturers: MMM, Belimed, Getinge, Lautenschläger, Holzner, Miele, Matachana.
